Historique

The Silver Shadow was launched in 1965 and followed on from the opulent Silver Cloud. The proportions were more modest, the line more sober, Rolls adopting the pontoon line for the first time. The Shadow was a real commercial success. It was an excellent road car with a very British presence and chic.

Even if it means upsetting traditions, Rolls-Royce has adopted its historic grille but reduced its height by half. This is the first time since 1914 that Rolls-Royce has touched its symbol... If the line is new, it is nonetheless very classic and well balanced, harmoniously set on a substantial wheelbase (3 meters) and its 15-inch wheels flanked by very attractive steel hubcaps. Only the front accepts similarities with the Silver Cloud III, in particular the doubled front lights. The rear trunk adopts small lights that emphasize the body line that ends at the bumper. With chrome galore to emphasize a certain idea of luxury, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow exudes a wildly classic style, but less formal than the Silver Cloud. With its self-supporting shell structure (this is unprecedented, no more separate chassis), the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow also marks the end of specific bodies made to order and made to measure by specialists of the genre (Mulliner, Park Ward)...

The Silver Shadow receives the engine of its predecessor, a 6.2-liter V8 with a short stroke and a crankshaft mounted on five bearings, whose block and cylinder heads are made of aluminum. Its power is estimated at the peaceful value of 200 hp, the manufacturer still faithful to this singular custom of hiding the power and torque of its engines…

Cars destined for the domestic market were fitted with the four-speed General Motors Hydramatic transmission built under licence by Rolls-Royce, while those built for export (i.e. left-hand drive) benefited from the new three-speed Hydramatic Turbo gearbox imported from the United States (it would equip all models from 1968).

Modified in 1970, the engine saw its displacement increase to 6750 cm3 after reboring. The crankshaft was also redesigned and the power gained around twenty horsepower at the same speed of 4500 rpm.

Our example, which was built in 1971, therefore benefits from this increase in engine capacity. But it also boasts an exceptional condition. Its presentation and operation perfectly illustrate all the quality and refinement that constituted a Rolls in the 70s.

We acquired this Shadow in March 2022, and supported by the demands of the customer for whom we reserved it, we left no stone unturned in order to make it as perfect as possible: repair of all the interior woodwork, repair of the gearbox seal, repair of the sphere connectors, replacement of the front axle silentblocs, recommissioning of the air conditioning, replacement of the brake hoses, complete overhaul, etc.

Please note that the photos shown were taken before restoration of the woodwork.
